Cartoons have been around for decades. Throughout this time, cartoon character disabilities have been portrayed in various ways. Elmer Fudd is one of the first examples of this, dating back to the 1930’s, where Elmer Fudd is portrayed has having an obvious speech impediment. Recent examples of this include the cartoon Family Guy, which portrays a paraplegic character, Joe Swanson, being caught stealing money from the community.

Disabilities are very much a part of cartoons today. Within each cartoon lays positive and negative depictions of disabilities. Even though Family Guy makes light of Joe’s disability, he is still portrayed as more able bodied than anyone else in the show. South Park goes to great lengths to create humor with disabilities, but at the same time portray children who are disabled as a smart functioning part of that society. When you look at the icing on the cake you may not like what you see, but if you take the time to experience what is inside it you will realize that everything is not always as bad as it may appear. Cartoons may make fun of disabilities, but people with disabilities still are positively portrayed within the show.
